  • Peru is located on South America’s central Pacific coast. The world’s twentieth-largest nation, Peru is bordered on the north by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil, on the southeast by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.
  • Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru. It was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535 as la Ciudad de los Reyes, or “the City of Kings.
  • Cusco sits over 11,000 feet above sea level in the heart of the Andes. This Peruvian city is widely considered the archaeological capital of the Americas thanks to its incredible mix of colonial and ancient Incan architecture. Once the center of the Inca Empire, Cuzco remains a mecca of sorts for adventure-minded travelers touring South America. Cuzco’s stunning mountain setting, traditional handicrafts and vibrant festivals make it an absolutely essential destination for tourists visiting Peru.
  • Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Incan site located on a ridge between the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains in Peru. It sits 7,970 feet (2,430 meters) above sea level on the eastern slope of the Andes and overlooks the Urubamba River hundreds of feet below. The site’s excellent preservation, the quality of its architecture, and the breathtaking mountain vista it occupies has made Machu Picchu one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world today. The site covers 80,000 acres (32,500 hectares). Terraced fields on the edge of the site were once used for growing crops, likely maize and potatoes.
