This Golden Circle tour takes you from Reykjavik city to Þingvellir National Park, arguably the most important site in Iceland in terms of history, culture, and geology.

Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site, home to Iceland‘s largest natural lake and the place where the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia split and drift apart. Þingvellir is also the birth place of the Old Icelandic Commonwealth and the Alþingi assembly, where Iceland’s most powerful leaders met to decide on legislation and carry out brutal viking-age justice.

The tour continues from Þingvellir along the Golden Circle route, across an area of beautiful scenery towards two of Iceland’s greatest natural attractions at Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring area.

At Gullfoss waterfall you can take a short walk down a pathway and get right up close to this powerful waterfall and feel the mist of glacial water on your face as it cascades down into the narrow Hvítárgljúfur Canyon.

Lunch break is taken at Friðheimar greenhouse & café to sample some of their impossibly delicious tomato soup and home baked bread.

Home of “The Great Geysir” hot spring, which all geysers are named after, this area, is an impressive collage of bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and colourful algae deposits. It also features one of the world’s most reliable fountain geyser, Strokkur hot spring, that every 4 to 8 minutes blasts out a column of super-heated water up to 20 metres into the air.

Day 03 : South Coast of Iceland ( B, L, D)

Pick up at 09:00 and proceed to  Skogafoss Waterfall – one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland.

Just east of Hvolsvöllur the infamous Eyjafjallajokull Glacier volcano rises 1666 metres above sea level. Erupting in 2010 Eyjafjallajökull made the world news when an ash cloud paralyzed much of Europe’s airspace for six days.

Next stop is at Skógar to visit the famous Skógafoss waterfall that by many is considered among the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. From Skógar you travel eastwards past Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the formidable Mt. Katla volcano to the sands of Mýrdalssandur you enter the enormous lava field Eldgjárhraun produced during a massive volcanic eruption of Eldgjá volcanic fissure in 934. The lava field covers an area of about 700 km2 and is considered one of the largest lava flows to occur in Iceland since the end of the last ice age.

Gamla Fjosid restaurant will offer us excellent traditional lunch. They have a long tradition of Icelandic cooking from their own produce.

Next stop is at Fjadrargljufur Canyon, sumptuous, massive canyon about 100 meters deep and about 2 kilometers long. It is located in the South East of Iceland close to Kirkjubæjarklaustur village. Fjadrargljufur Canyon was created by a progressive erosion that took millions of years, erosion coming from waters from glaciers. Gljúfur means canyon in Iceland and Fjaðrá is the name of the river that runs through it.

From one sand plain to another the tour crosses Skeiðararsandur plains a vast desolate area of black volcanic sands between Skeiðarárjökull glacier and the sea.
