Get off the beaten path and enjoy a truly memorable experience in the Peruvian Highlands! Lares trek, known as a “cultural trek”, offers you an insight into the mystical Andean world, and stunning views of mountains, glaciers, lagoons, and valleys. Along the way, you will pass through different Quechua communities where you can interact with locals and learn about their ancient customs! Although the Inca trail to Machu Picchu is the only trek that leads you into Machu Picchu itself, our Lares trek includes a short train journey from Ollantaytambo to Aguascalientes and a guided tour of Machu Picchu as well.

You will love exploring the “hidden city” of Machu Picchu, interacting with the “children of the sun” who live on the floating reed islands of Uros, swimming in the Amazon River surrounded by the Pink Dolphins, canoeing, kayaking, piranha fishing and learning how local people live in the Amazon rainforest!

ITINERARY

Day 01/ 16th June 2018: Arrival Lima

Once your flight lands at Jorge Chavez International airport, follow the signs to immigration and then to customs. After exiting customs, you will be in the International arrivals area, where your driver will meet and greet you, he will be holding a sign with Rahhalah logo, and drive you to your hotel located in Miraflores area.

Upon arrival at your hotel, our Staff will welcome you and assist you with all you may need.

Day 2 / 17th June 2018 : Flight from Lima to Iquitos ( B, L, D)

You will be picked up from your hotel and driven to Lima airport to board your flight to Iquitos.

Upon arrival at Iquitos airport, our representative will meet and greet you, he will be holding a sign with Rahhalah logo, and drive you to Iquitos pier to board the fast boat to Muyuna Lodge located 87 miles upriver south of Iquitos city, at Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo community Reserve on the banks of Yanayacu River. During the boat trip through the amazing Amazon River, you will observe how people of the local communities live and sail on the Amazon River as if it were a highway in the Amazon.

After almost 3 hours of sailing you will arrive at Muyuna Lodge, after a welcome drink (fruit juice) you will be accommodated in your room.

Before lunch, you will have a briefing about your stay in the Amazon, safety issues, excursions, list of animals seen in the area, what to wear and reply any questions you may have.

Leoncito walking tour                                                                   

This afternoon, you will have a walking tour to appreciate the immense variety of flora around the Muyuna area. You can taste the water that Uncaria tomentosa (cat’s claw) has within its vines – which is used to cure cancer and AIDS. You will also be amazed by the huge Ceiba tree. In addition, you will see the world’s smallest monkey, the pigmy marmoset, and the squirrel and tamarin monkeys. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the howler monkey, whose deafening roar can be heard many miles away.

After dinner, you will enjoy a boat excursion for nocturnal Cayman spotting, observation of birds and mammals.

Day 3 / 18th June 2018 : Amazon Lagoons, Canoeing and Piranha Fishing ( B, L, D)

After a very early morning, you will have a 20-minute boat trip to Sapote lagoon to enjoy watching parrots, jacanas, kingfishers, herons, panguana, partridges, pigeons, cormorants and horned screamers. Then we head to Moena lagoon where you can observe sloth, monkeys, squirrel, monk, stump, and other amazon animals like turtles and iguanas.

At 10:30 am. we return to the lodge to enjoy your time canoeing or kayaking in the river before Lunch.

This afternoon, we travel by boat to Purura and Corrientes lagoons where you will enjoy a piranha fishing adventure and watching the colorful Amazon bird of hoatzin or “shansho”.

20:00 Nocturnal boat trip to search for birds and Iguanas.

Day 4 / 19th June 2018 : Swimming in the Amazon. Muyuna Lodge – Iquitos. Flight Iquitos – Lima ( B , L)

After breakfast, we will have a boat ride to Buenos Aires beach in the Amazon RIver, a calm area where you will watch and swim surrounded by the pink dolphins. On the way back to the lodge, you will see the biggest aquatic plant in the world, the famous Victoria Regia.

After lunch, we will board our fast boat and return to Iquitos and then to the airport to board your flight back to Lima.

Upon arrival at Lima airport you will be driven to your hotel.

Day 5 / 20th June 2018 : Flight from Lima to Cusco ( B)

This afternoon, you are picked up from your hotel and embark on a memorable experience visiting the beautiful city of Cusco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

You tour starts with a smooth walk to the main attractions of this Inca city, its main square known as Plaza de Armas, then the Cusco Cathedral which construction started in 1559 and has an impressive unique collection of more than 400 paintings from Cusco school made during the 16th and 17th century. Next, you walk through the narrow Inca streets close the Plaza and appreciate the massive Inca walls which are the foundations of Cusco city.

Your tour includes a visit to the most impressive Inca temples, Koricancha, which is known as the temple of the sun. During the Inca time, the walls of this temple were lined in sheets of solid gold and its courtyard was decorated with statues and ornaments of gold! You tour includes a visit to Santo Domingo Church built by the Spanish colonists.

After visiting the city of Cusco, we will head to Sacsayhuaman, an amazing Inca fortress which main walls perfectly fitted, were built with massive stones. You will learn more about the Incas’ secrets, we continue to Qenko, site of carved living rockthen to Puca Pucara, an Inca lodging Site and finally Tambo Machay, known as the Baths of the Inca. At the end, you will have an amazing view of the Inca city and surrounding areas.

Day 7 / 22nd June 2018 : Whitewater rafting on the Urubamba River ( B)

Whitewater rafting on the Urubamba River ( B)

This morning you will be driven to Pachar village the starting point of our whitewater rafting adventure on the Urbamba River.

Upon arrival, all participants will be given a safety briefing by our river guide. The briefing touch on paddling commands, capsize drills and actions when overboard; participants will be provided with Helmets, wetsuits, splash jackets and personal flotation device.

Once everyone is ready, we start with a quick practice on the calm parts of the river, our adventure starts on easy water surrounded by beautiful mountains and archaeological remains, then we head to Ollantaytambo and its amazing Inca terraces, on the way we will enjoy class II-III rapids and finish by “El Resbaladero” (The Slide), a great class III rapid that includes waves and small whirlpools. We finish our adventure by Cachiccata community located a few minutes to Olantaytambo village.

After lunch, we walk to the Inca Bridge to start our horseback riding adventure. This afternoon, you will enjoy great views of the sacred valley surrounded by mountains, eucalyptus trees and passing thru small Quechua villages. The horseback riding level is easy and safe.

Day 8 / 23rd June 2018 : Embark on your Lares Trail Adventure ( B, L, D)

Estimated hiking time: six hours

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and have a short drive to Huaran community (9,180 feet/2,800 meters),a beautiful village surrounded by green mountains and one side of the sacred Urubamba River in the valley of the Incas.

Upon arrival in Huaran, we will meet our wranglers and horses. We start our adventure to Laresled by our professional guide and accompanied by our Cook, Wranglers and horses. We climb up out of the valley through an uphill trail and walk alongsideCanchaCancha stream, on the way, we will enjoy the beautiful views of the crops, mountains and lagoons.

After a five-hour hike we arrive in CanchaCancha community, where our Cook will have our energetic lunch ready, then we will have time to rest and interact with the local farmers, our tents will be set up here for our first night.

Day 9 / 24th June 2018 : Cancha Cancha – Quiswarani ( B, L, D)

Estimated hiking distance: 7.5 miles/12 kilometers

Estimated hiking time: six hours           

After a hearty breakfast, we start our three-hour hike uphill to Pachacutec Pass (15,092 feet/4,600 meters), the highest point of the trek but worth reaching. From the top of the pass we will have spectaculars views of Lake Pachacutec, the snow-peaked mountain of Pitusiray and the valleys. After having pictures from Pachacutec pass we will continue hiking for one hour and stop to have our delicious energetic lunch.

After a short break, we continue our two-hour hike downhill to Quiswarani Quechua community (12,139 feet/3,700 meters), where our tents will be set up.

Day 10 / 25th June 2018 : Quiswarani - Cuncani - Lares (hot springs) ( B , L, D)

Estimated hiking time: six hours

After an early hot breakfast, we start with a three-hour hike uphill to Huillquijasa Pass (13,780 feet/4,200 meters) along the way we will have amazing views of beautiful turquoise lakes and Colquecruz snow-peaked mountain. After reaching the Pass, we continue hiking downhill to Cuncani community (12,139 feet/3,700 meters) located in the valley of the same name. Finally, we arrive at Lares hot springs where we can relax in the warm waters.

After enjoying the hot springs, you will be driven to Ollantaytambo to have lunch and then board your late afternoon train to Aguascalientes. Upon arrival, you will be accommodated in your hotel.

Day 11 / 26th June 2018 : Sun Gate and Machu Picchu ( B, L, D)

Today is the most exciting day of your life-changing Adventure. After a very early breakfast, you will board the bus to Machu Picchu Sanctuary and then have a short hike up to the “Sun Gate” where you will enjoy an amazing sight of the “lost city” of Machu Picchu.  You may want to spend some time sitting and overlooking Machu Picchu, what a wonderful view!

Then, we hike down back to Machu Picchu sanctuary, one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites on earth!

Machu Picchu Tour

You will enjoy a guided tour of the most amazing Inca city in the Americas and learn about the history of this site. You will have some insight into the various features of this sacred city and have free time to enjoy yourself!

13:00 p.m. Lunch at Tinkuy Restaurant located at the Sanctuary Lodge.

After lunch time, you will board the bus to AguasCalientes, where you will spend the night.

After breakfast, you will board the bus to Machu Picchu for your hiking adventure to Huayna Picchu Mountain.

After your hiking adventure, you will board the bus to AguasCalientes for lunch and then board the vista dome train to Cusco.

Day 14 / 29th June 2018 : Boat trip on Lake Titicaca and Homestay at Amantani Island ( B, L, D)

After Breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to Puno pier to embark on a lifetime adventure on Lake Titicaca. Our first stop will be the floating Totora reed Islands of The Uros here you will see how these pre-Incan people live and learn about their ancient customs and traditions.

We continue our journey through the lake towards Amantani Island, where you will spend the night with an Aymara family and learn about this unique pre-Inca culture.

Day 15 / 30th June 2018 : Taquile Island. Puno ( B, L)

After breakfast, your Lake Titicaca adventure continues onto Taquile Islands, here you will interact with the locals and learn more about Inca’s culture and traditions. Their lifestyle remains the same as it has been for centuries, the inhabitants of this island are very famouos because of their beautiful textiles and some of the best handicraft in the Inca region.

In the afternoon, we will return to Puno pier, from where you will be transferred to your hotel.

You will be picked up from your hotel and driven to Juliaca airport to board your flight to Lima.

Day 16 / 1st July 2018 : Private Lima Experience/ Departure ( B)

This morning, you are picked up from your hotel and start your adventure in Lima city. Your day starts with a visit to a local Market, where you will learn about Peruvian fruits, potatoes, vegetables, fish and other ingredients used in the local Cuisine.

After a short experience with Peruvian Gastronomy, you will be driven the city of the Kings and explore the beautiful monuments, Colonial houses adorned with Moorish-style balconies, their main Plazas like San Martin and Plaza de Armas, a view of the baroque cathedral, the Governors Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace with its big carved wooden balconies, and a guided visit inside the convent of San Francisco which is home to the largest collection of religious art in the Americas. Underneath the convent lie extensive catacombs that served as the cemetery during the colonial period.

Your tour includes a visit to the beautiful olive tree park and “Park of Love” where you will have a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean! After your Lima tour, your guide can recommend you a nice Restaurant to have lunch overlooking the Pacific Ocean!

Inca Trail Regulations:

Please keep in mind that the access to the Inca trail is controlled by SERNANP (Machu Picchu Authority) which has established a maximum number of people allowed on the trail per day. Inca trail permits are granted on a first come first served basis so your Inca trail permit will be confirmed only after your passport information and deposit are provided. The Inca trail permits are limited to 500 per day (trek permits are also required for the porters and cooks) so it is very important that we receive your Inca Trail reservations as far ahead as possible.
