Day 03

10th November 2019
  • Cape Town half-day city tour – Robben Island tour (B)

There is no doubt that Cape Town deserves its reputation as one of the most desirable destinations on the planet! It is hard to find cities so beautiful and welcoming.
It lies in a natural amphitheatric shape, bordering with Table Bay and hugged by Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Signal Hill and Devil’s Peak. The city center may be small but is home to a vibrant history and culture, as well as many great shops and restaurants. It holds many attractions for any traveler wanting to experience interesting conversations and stories while visiting historic landmarks and discovering how Cape Town developed from the original “tavern of the seas” (a refreshment post halfway en route to the Spice Island) into the sophisticated city that we see today.

The V&A (Victoria and Alfred) Waterfront, perched between Robben Island and Table Mountain in the heart of Cape Town's working harbour, has become South Africa's most visited destination. Set against a backdrop of sea and mountain views, various shopping and entertainment venues intermingle with creative office locations, world-class hotels and luxury apartments. The Waterfront is the heart of the tourist industry in Cape Town.

After finishing the half-day city tour, you will take a ferry trip across the bay to Robben Island (weather permitting). From the 17th to the 20th century, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder of the price the recently newly democratic South Africa has paid for freedom.
Since 1997, Robben island has been a museum and a heritage site. The museum is a dynamic institution, which acts as a focal point of South African heritage. It runs educational programmes for schools and adults, facilitates tourism development, conducts ongoing research related to the Island, and acts as an archiving system as well.

The tour to Robben Island is 3.5-hours long, including the two half-hour ferry rides. Ferries depart at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm, weather permitting, from the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Accommodation: The More Quarters hotel or similar.
