Detailed Itinerary

Day 01

6th June 2019
  • Arrival at Lima

    Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by a Rahhalah representative who will take you to the hotel (located in Miraflores, the most beautiful and safest area of Lima, facing the Pacific Ocean). You will relax for the rest of your day, exploring the city at your own pace.
    Overnight in Lima at Casa Andina Select Miraflores – Superior Room.

Day 02

7th June 2019
  • Exploring Lima (B, D)

    After breakfast, you will embark on an exploration of the capital city of Peru. You will start with a short visit to a local farmers’ market where you will learn about various Peruvian fruits, the famous potatoes, local vegetables, fish and other ingredients used in the local cuisine.
    Afterwards, you will be driven to the City of the Kings to explore its beautiful monuments, including numerous colonial houses adorned with Moorish-style balconies, central Plazas like San Martin and Plaza de Armas, the baroque cathedral, the Governors’ Palace, the Archbishop's Palace with its bigwood-carved balconies, and the convent of San Francisco: home to the largest collection of religious art in the Americas. Underneath the convent,there isa vast network of catacombs that served as a cemetery during the colonial period.
    The tour will end with a visit to the beautiful olive tree park and the “Park of Love” where you will enjoy stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.
    Enjoy a relaxing afternoon exploring the parks and markets ofMiraflores, before meeting for the welcome dinner.
    Note: for your Amazon adventure starting the next day, you will be required to pack in a duffel bag or a suitcase only the clothes you will need during the next three days, including a daypack with mosquito spray, sunblock, a water bottle, a raincoat or rain poncho, sunglasses, sun hat and personal medication (if needed). The rest of your things will be stored in the Amazon Lodge in Puerto Maldonado.

Day 03

8th June 2019
  • Transfer to Puerto Maldonado/ Refugio Amazonas Lodge (B, L, D)

    After an early breakfast, you will be driven to the Lima airport to board your flight to Puerto Maldonado.
    At Puerto Maldonado, you will be welcomed by the local Rahhalah guide who will take you to the Refugio Amazonas Lodge office where you will register,leave the excess luggage in a safe deposit and then depart for the Tambopata River Port, to take the boat to the Refugio Amazonas Lodge.
    Estimated boat-ride time: 2.5 hrs.
    Upon arrival at Refugio Amazonas, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you on important navigation and security tips.
    Please note that your guide will always provide you with any necessary information prior to every excursion. Your itinerary may be modified due to weather conditions that may affect access to certain areas.
    After dinner, you will enjoy a caiman search, walking by the river’s edge, scanning the banks with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection on caiman eyes.

Day 04

9th June 2019
  • Oxbow Lake - Canopy Tower - Ethnobotanical Tour (B, L, D)

    After breakfast, you will paddle around the lake on a canoe or catamaran, looking for lakeside wildlife such as hoatzin, caiman, and horned screamers, hoping to see otters and macaws as well.
    A thirty-minute walk from the Refugio Amazonas leads to the 25-meter scaffolding canopy tower. The tower has been built on high ground, enhancing thus your view of the rainforest forest up until the Tambopata National Reserve. From there you will see toucans, macaws and raptors.
    After lunch, you will visit a farm owned and managed by Don Manuel from the community of Condenado. He grows a variety of popular and exotic Amazon crops.
    Late in the afternoon, you will enjoy an ethnobotanical tour packed with interesting information about the variety of plants and trees (like Ajo-Sacha, Yuca de Venado, Uña de Gato, Charcot-Sacha, Para-Para, to name but a few) that are used by the local population for medicinal purposes.
    After dinner, there will be a presentation about ecotourism projects in the Tambopata National Reserve.

Day 05

10th June 2019
  • Boat ride from Refugio Amazonas to Puerto Maldonado city/ Flight to Cusco (B)

    After breakfast, you will head to the airport of Puerto Maldonado city to fly to Cusco (after retrieving your luggage from the Refugio Amazonas Lodge).
    At Cusco airport, you will be greeted by your new Rahhalah guides and will be transferred to your hotel.
    Enjoy the rest of the afternoon, relaxing, acclimatizing, and exploring Cusco at your own pace.

Day 06

11th June 2019
  • Exploring Cusco (B)

    After a relaxing morning, you will enjoy a guided tour around Cusco (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), visiting its most remarkable landmarks. Yourjourneywill start with a stroll around the main attractions of the ancient Inca capital: its main square known as Plaza de Armas, and the 16th-centuryCathedral that boasts an impressive collection of more than 400 paintings from the Cusco art school dating to the 16th and 17th century.
    The tour includes a visit to the most impressive of the Inca temples:Koricancha, known as the Temple of the Sun. During the Inca times, the walls of this temple were lined with sheets of solid gold, and its courtyard was decorated with golden statues and ornaments.You will finish with a visit to the Santo Domingo Church built by the Spanish colonists, before moving outside the city for an exploration of a series of other important Inca monuments.
    First, you will head to Sacsayhuaman: an amazing Inca fortress whose main walls are perfectly fitted, built with massive stones. You will learn more about the Incas’ secrets, before continuing to Qenko , Puca Pucara (an Inca lodging site), and Tambo Machay (known as the Baths of the Inca).
    Note: for your Inca trail trek to Machu Picchu starting the next day, you should pack only what you will need during the next few days, while the rest of your luggage will remain stored in the hotel.

Day 07

12th June 2019
  • Whitewater rafting on the Urubamba River/ Horseback riding Adventure in the sacred valley (B, L)

    After breakfast, you will be driven to Pachar village: the starting point of your whitewater rafting adventure on the Urbamba River.
    Upon arrival, all participants will be given a safety briefing by the guide, including paddling commands, capsize drills, and actions when overboard. Participants will be provided with helmets, wetsuits, splash jackets and a personal flotation device.
    The rafting adventure will start on tranquil waters surrounded by beautiful mountains and archaeological remains, before heading to Ollantaytambo and its amazing Inca terraces. On the way, you will enjoy class II-III rapids, and you will finish by “El Resbaladero” (“the slide”), a great class III rapid that includes waves and small whirlpools. You will end by the by Cachiccata community located a few minutes away from the Ollantaytambo village.
    In the afternoon, you will go on a horseback riding adventure, enjoyingmagnificent views of the sacred valley surrounded by mountains, eucalyptus trees and small Quechua villages. The level of this activity is easy and safe.
    After your horseback riding tour, you will be driven to your hotel in Ollantaytambo.

Day 08

13th June 2019
  • Exploring the Sacred Valley (B, L)

    After breakfast, you will depart for an exploration of the Sacred Valley. You will start with a smooth drive to the Andean village of Maras, located at 3,400 meters (11,152 ft) above sea level, where you will spend some time, before continuing to Moray, a beautiful archaeological site consisting of enormous terraced circular depressions and a sophisticated irrigation system. Moray was probably an Incan agricultural center that served as a farming lab during the Incan times for the development of different strains of crops.
    You will then head to “Las Salineras de Maras”, the salt-pans that date to the pre-Inca era. These beautiful salt ponds are located at over 3,300 meters (10,827 feet) above sea level, very far from the Ocean!
    After lunch, you will continue exploring the Sacred Valley enjoying the green hills and vast fields of giant corns and potatoes, before arriving at thePisac village, where you will visit the Inca Ruins of Pisac: a beautiful archaeological complex thatincludes not only temples but also agricultural and military constructions.
    The tour ends a quick visit to the famous local Market of Pisac, where local families sell their products and unique handicraft.

Day 09

14th June 2019
  • Trek kick-off /Huchuy Qosqo Ruins (B, L, D)

    Estimated hiking distance: 4 miles/7 kilometers.
    Estimated hiking time: 7 hours.
    After breakfast, you will be transferred to the village of Chincherowhere(1.5 hr. drive) where you will visit its archaeological center, before continuing towards the Quechua community of Tauca located at an altitude of 3,460 meters (11,352 feet) above sea level, on the shores of thePiuray lagoon. This will be the starting point of your hiking adventure to Huchuy Qosqo. After a three-hour uphill hike, you will reach the Tauca pass located at 4,100 meters (13,451 feet) above sea level, where you will be rewarded with the most breathtaking views of the Inca’s sacred valley. Note that, in order to have an easier uphill hike, each hiker will have a horse to ride (if needed). You will continue with a two-hour downhill hike to the camping site, located close to the Huchuy Qosqo ruins.

Day 10

15th June 2019
  • Huchuy Qosqo Tour /Lamay – Ollantaytambo (B, L)

    Estimated hiking distance: 2.5 miles/4 kilometers.
    Estimated hiking time: 3 hours.
    After breakfast, you will visit the beautiful Inca city of Huchuy Qosqo, whose name in Quechua means "little Cusco", built on the heights of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After enjoying this magnificent complex, you will embark on a 3-hour downhill hike to the village of Lamay located on the shores of the Urubamba River. There, you will meet the cars that will take you back to your hotel in Ollantaytambo.

Day 11

16th June 2019
  • Vista dome train journey from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu (B, L)

    After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the train station to board the vista dome train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo).
    Upon arrival at Machu Picchu train station, you will be welcomed by your guide and have a 25-minute bus journey to Machu Picchu where, with the help of your experienced guide, you will explore the remains of one of the most significant sacred sites of the world. You will learn about the history of the sanctuary, who lived there, how it was discovered in the 20th century, and why it remained hidden from the Spaniards for centuries.
    At the end of the tour, you will have some free time to enjoy the spectacular monument by yourself, savoring this once-in-a-lifetime experience at your own pace.
    After lunch time, you will board the bus to Aguas Calientes, where you will spend the night.

Day 12

17th June 2019
  • Machu Picchu (B)

    After breakfast, you will enjoy a few free hours to explore Aguas Calientes, spending time in its market, or resting in the cafes basking under the sun, listening to the peaceful melodies of Peruvian music played in the streets by itinerant musicians.
    Later in the afternoon, you will take the train from Machu Picchu Pueblo back to Ollantaytambo.

Day 13

18th June 2019
  • Ollantaytambo – Cusco (B, D)

    After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and driven to Cusco. This will be your last chance to enjoy the ancient capital of the Incas, discovering small shops, famous cafes and restaurants, and an art scene that will fascinate you.
    In the evening, you will meet all again for a Farewell Dinner.

Day 14

19th June 2019
  • Flight from Cusco to Lima / Departure (B)

    After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport to board your flight to Lima city and, from there, you will proceed to your departure flights back home.
