Day 02

  • Ammarnäs- Boat ride and trekking (B, L,D)

After breakfast, you will head to a nearby lake (15-min drive), where you will meet your hiking guide, Micke Vinka, who will introduce you to the world of the Sami.

Micke isa Sami reindeer herder with an enormous heart (as are the rest of the members of his family whom you might meet). He keeps alive the Sami traditions and is an excellent storyteller, sharing the history, magic, religion and traditional wisdom of his tribe. He focuses on tourism and reindeer herding, while he also does conservational work for the government, especially connected to the arctic fox. He knows his ancestors’ paths and spends most of his days trekking on the mountains or working in his beautiful “farm”Geunja. This makes him an excellent host for your stay in Sweden.

Wearing your life jackets, you will embark on Micke’s wooden boat heading to a smaller lake through a narrow passage, surrounded by stunning views. If the weather is nice, you will pause in the middle of the lake to listen to more stories of Sami wisdom and maybe pass by Geunja, Micke’s home, situated by the beach. There is also a fertile delta with lots of wildlife to explore with the boat.
Later, you will go on a hiking trip, during which you will enjoy the landscape, while you will learn about the traditional and shamanic herbs used for medicinal purposes or for cooking. Micke will share information about the Arctic fox and the relevant conservational projects that are taking place in the area. You will walk to one of the dens, and with luck, you may even spot a fox. The length of the trek and the paths used will be decided by Micke depending on the group’s abilities and wishes.

After the trek, Micke will take you back to the shore, and you will return to the lodge for dinner.
