This truly is a unique experience!! Tumbatu is one of Zanzibar’s best kept secrets, as the vast majority is forbidden to set foot on the Island. To enter the island you need special permission from the elders of the community on Tumbatu. People call the Watumbatu – inhabitants of Tumbatu - aloof and unfriendly, just because they are living as a very close, self- supporting community. You won’t find cars or scooters and Tumbatu has only one road to walk on within the island, even though they are living on the island where in the 11th century the Shiraz built the first stone building in the entire Zanzibar Archipelago.

    MAALE - Sandbank
Leaving from Mkokotoni by boat you are heading to the fishing territories of the Watumbatu, the citizens of Tumbatu. One of the oldest fishermen within the Watumbatu will show out at sea, towards the sandbank of Tumbatu how they fish with nets and traps. Fishing is the major revenue of the island, though the Watumbatu don’t eat too much fish themselves. They trade with their fish in the nearby fishing village Mkokotoni. After you have witnessed the special techniques of the Watumbatu, which have the reputation of being the best sailors in the region you move on and head towards the village Jongowe, on the South of Tumbatu Island.

JONGOWE – learn the Watumbatu life
After arriving at the beach of Jongowe, you will see how the Watumbatu prepare their fishing nets, fish traps and also how they build and maintain their boats – all by hand! In a short walk you will arrive at the school of Jongowe and learn about who built the school and the importance of the huge and old Baobab trees to the community. You will see the difference between new and old sections of the village and you will visit the house of a fisherman’s family. We will show you the unspoken secrets of Tumbatu, as they are world famous for witch craft.

    Return back to the hotel.

Overnight  at Sandies Baobab Beach hotel / Nungwi ( All Inclusive basis ) or similar.

Within three well-invested hours you will gain a good understanding of the fascinating history of Zanzibar’s capital city and its significant areas, buildings and historical sites. You will soon notice how Zanzibar’s cosmopolitan roots (Arabs, Indians, Yemenis, Persians, Portuguese, British, Chinese and others) blend with African traditions to shape its unique culture.

We start with a visit to Stone Town’s colourful main market in Darajani, which is bustling with locals selling fresh vegetables and baskets of tropical fruits.
We continue to the site of the former slave market and the Anglican cathedral built in 1873.
From there we’ll visit with you the palace of the former Sultan of Zanzibar, the 'Hamamni Persian Bath', the Old Fort which is next to the 'House of Wonders' and many other buildings that reflect the variety of cultural influences.

There are distinctive features of Arab and Indian urban architecture to discover at every turn, such as the famous Zanzibar doors, elaborately carved with ornaments and verses from the Q’ran (Arab) or plants and animals (Indian) and decorated with brass studs, quaint balconies and verandas, small hidden gardens, saint’s graves, and much more.

Lunch at Emerson Spice – Secret Garden ( own expenses )
Today you will enjoy also a spice tour and get introduced to the aromatic world of spices. For centuries Zanzibar's cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and other spices, medicinal and ornamental plants, as well as tropical fruits attracted traders across the Indian Ocean. This three to four hour tour will seduce your senses with a mixture of various smells, tastes and textures. Among the many different plants you will encounter are the henna bush, ylang-ylang, the lipstick tree, iodine plant, cocoa, cassava, dasheen cocoyam and – yes, Zanzibar coffee!
